"Dear God" is a song by the English stone band XTC that was first released every bit a non-album single with the A-side "Grass". Written by Andy Partridge, the song lyrics grapple with the beingness of God and the problem of evil. Partridge was inspired by a serial of books with the aforementioned title, which Partridge viewed equally exploitative of children. The song was originally intended for the album Skylarking , merely left off due to concerns from Partridge and Virgin Records. Subsequently college radio DJs across America picked up the song, US distributor Geffen Records recalled and re-pressed Skylarking with the track included. [1]

Partridge was dissatisfied with "Dear God" equally he felt the lyrics were not representative of his views on faith, which was partly the reason why it was left off Skylarking. The vocal's anti-religious message ultimately provoked some violent reactions. In the Us, ane radio station received a bomb threat, and in another incident, a student forced their school to play the vocal over its public-address system while property a faculty fellow member hostage. Partridge also received a plethora of hate mail. He stated that he "felt deplorable" for whoever he upset, nevertheless, "if you can't have a unlike stance without them wanting to firebomb your house and then that's their problem." [two]

The music video for "Love God", one of the first to be directed past photographer Nick Brandt, received the 1987 Billboard Best Video accolade and was besides nominated for 3 categories at the MTV Video Music Awards. [3] In 2009, the song was ranked at No. 62 on VH1's 100 Greatest I Hit Wonders of the 80s, [4] despite the fact that XTC had college charting singles in the decade. In 2011, Todd Rundgren, who produced the original XTC recording of the vocal, recorded a encompass version for his album (re)Production .

Background [ edit ]

Partridge claimed that, as a child, he once received a vision of a "classic Renaissance picture show of God", but his reaction was only to become less religious. [v]

"Beloved God" is virtually a struggling agnostic [half dozen] who writes a letter to God while challenging his existence. [5] The lyrical theme was inspired past a series of books with the same championship, seen by Partridge every bit exploitation of children. Accordingly:

Information technology's such a vast bailiwick -- human belief, the need for humans to believe the stuff they do, and the many strata involved, the many layers of faith and conventionalities and whatnot. ... also a big subject field for me, because I think it'd been bugging me for many years. I'd struggled with the concept of God and Man so on since I was a kid, even to the point where I got myself so worked up with worry about faith that -- effectually about the age of 7 or eight on a summer's 24-hour interval -- I saw the clouds part and, yous know, in that location was this sort of classic Renaissance movie of God surrounded by his angels looking at me scornfully. [five]

He conceived the music in a skiffle way [5] simply while playing the Beatles' "Rocky Raccoon", Partridge was inspired to move "Dear God" closer to that song's management. [ii] The cord section was intended to evoke "a sort of a Gershwin-y, blues-y, 'Summer' experience." [5] Skylarking producer Todd Rundgren suggested hiring a child to sing the commencement verse and closing line. [5] He brought in eight-year-old Jasmine Veillette, the daughter of a friend of Rundgren. However, a boy lip-syncs her vocals in the music video . [2]

Release [ edit ]

The rails did non announced on initial pressings of Skylarking, but was included as office of the anthology's original planned running order, which was sequenced past Rundgren. According to Partridge, the track had been left off the album because Virgin A&R executive Jeremy Lascelles was concerned almost the anthology'south length, and Partridge was advised that the song may upset American audiences; "I reluctantly agreed because I thought I hadn't written a potent enough have on religion. I thought I'd kind of failed." [7] Rundgren had a unlike recollection, and said that Partridge demanded that the song be pulled because "He was afraid that there would exist repercussions personally for him for taking on such a thorny discipline. ... I chosen them and said, 'This is a mistake.'" [8] Partridge denied such accusations: "if y'all tin't have a different opinion without [somebody] wanting to firebomb your house then that'south their trouble." [ii]

Instead, "Love God" was relegated as the Uk-only B-side to Skylarking pb single "Grass". It found popularity with American college radio DJs who imported the single. U.s. distributor Geffen Records were then "bombarded with enquiries virtually a song of which they knew nothing, recalled the album and re-pressed information technology with Dear God reinstated." [1] In June 1987, "Dear God" was reissued equally an A-sided single in both markets, reaching number 99 in the Great britain and failing to nautical chart in the US. Its success propelled Skylarking to sell more than 250,000 units. [ane]

Controversy [ edit ]

I got all the detest mail and the booklets ... Somebody sent me ane of those books called -- and I've still got information technology, because I thought the championship of it was fantastic -- You Can Alive Forever in Paradise on Earth. And I idea, "Wow!"

—Andy Partridge [5]

The song's anti-religious message inspired some vehement incidents. In Florida, a Panama City radio station received a bomb threat for playing the song, [9] and in New York, a Binghamton Loftier Schoolhouse student forced his school to play the song over its public-address arrangement while holding a faculty member at pocketknife-point. [10] [eleven] Some British shops refused to carry the single. [5] Partridge too received a plethora of hate postal service, although all of it was from the US. He commented: "I really felt sorry for the people who got so upset at someone expressing an opinion that might be contrary to their beliefs, or at who might have another accept on their beliefs. How could that make them and then fierce, potentially?" [five]

Although Partridge is an atheist, he believes that heaven and hell be metaphorically. [12] "Season Cycle", another song from Skylarking, included the couplet "Everybody says, Bring together our religion, get to heaven / I say, no thanks, why bless my soul, I'm already in that location!" [13] He returned to biblical themes for "Garden of Earthly Delights", a children'south guide to the globe that served every bit the opening rail on their follow-up anthology, Oranges & Lemons (1989). [14] Explaining the lyric "do what you lot desire to do / just don't injure nobody", he said: "I'yard sure that's what heaven is, really. Heaven is non hurting anyone." [12]
